Uses of stones

Stones are used in the under mentioned civil engineering constructions:

(i) Stone masonry is used for the construction of foundations, walls, pillars and arches.

(ii) Stones are used for flooring.

(iii) Stone slabs are used as damp proof courses, lintels and even as roofing material.

(iv) Good looking stones are used for the face work of buildings. Polished marble and granite are commonly used for face work.

(v) Stones are used to pave roads, sidewalks and open spaces around buildings.

(vi) Stones are also used in the construction of piers and abutments of bridges, dams and retaining walls.

(vii) Crushed stones are used along the grave to provide a base course for the roads. When mixed with tar they form a finishing coat.

(viii) Crushed stones are also used for the following purposes:

(a) As a basic inert material in concrete

(b) For making artificial stone and building blocks

(c) As railway ballast.
